Chicago: Ongoing car saga

So.

This started on Tuesday. On Monday I had called Enterprise and told them I wanted a car for upwards of a month. On Tuesday I went in and picked up a Mitsubishi Lancer. The Lancer was kind of junky/scratched/high mileage, so the guy told me to call on Thursday and bring it back in to swap it for another car.

Thursday I called and went in to pick up a Chevy Cavalier. Red, cute, sure, whatever. American, bleh, whatever, car, wheels, goes, fine. Huge distance between the gas and the brake, which confused me greatly. Would probably not have kept it due to that (it made me very uncomfortable driving it as the distance was way more than I was used to and it was hard to shift between them quickly.)

Friday my grandmother had an appointment with the social worker at her outpatient program. My aunt was supposed to go, and I was supposed to go to. Okay, fine, whatever. At first my aunt was going to pick me up but then we decided that I could just drive; it wasn't so far or so hard to get to so fine.

Appointment is at noon. Hospital is 8 miles away. Google tells me it will take 17 minutes to get there.

At 11.15 I went outside and got in the car. Turned it on, put it in reverse. Nothing happened.

Um, okay.

I hit the gas a bit and it grudgingly rolls backwards, making a horrible noise all while.

I put it in drive and nothing happens. I hit the gas and pull out. It is making a horrible grinding noise and is virtually uncontrollable.

Something is very very wrong.

I pass the two cars that are parked ahead of me and pull into the space in front of them. Only vaguely, though; I'm still about two feet out from the curb but it's impossible to steer this thing. So I park it and get out.

One tire is an accident.

Two is unlucky.

Four is malicious.

Guess how many tires are flat?

So I called my aunt and told her I couldn't make it, and I called Enterprise and they came out and picked me up and gave me a new car (Chevy Cobalt, which I like much better in any case). I was very glad that I had taken pictures before going in as I showed them to the guys at Enterprise and they said, huh, yeah, wow, and gave me no hassle.

Looking closer it looks like someone pulled the caps off the tires. But I don't know if that is enough to flatten them or whether they also went and punctured them for good measure.

In either case, I'm kind of pissed off right now. Because, you know, there's nothing like random harassment to make you feel welcomed and loved.

I hate you, Chicago.

I know it is no consolation, but someone slashed one of my tires in Davis Square on the fourth...and it sucked too. That is all.
